Freedom Hands

Thank you MLK.  Today we celebrate human diversity and the work of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

To celebrate his legacy, we started the day with cookies and a quote...
. . . then we pushed up our sleeves and decorated the classroom door.

Our Freedom Hands are all about Dr. King's message of love and the ripple effect of doing good.

Thanks, Gourmet Mom, for the cookie recipe.

Hat Day

National Hat Day is set aside to wear and enjoy a hat of your choice.
When : Always January 15th
Room 102 learned there's a hat to fit every size head and personality.

A couple "designer hats" came to school too.

Hat Day also introduced students to 20 hat idioms. Helping students understand idioms will increase their vocabularies and enrich their writing. Figurative language is a whole lot of fun.

Test your "hat idiom" knowledge on quizlet.

New Year

Welcome Back! The New Year brought energy and excitement. Room 102 buzzed as students shared favorite gifts or favorite moments from winter break.
In computer lab we brainstormed vocabulary words associated with New Year and the year 2013.  Students gathered up all these terms to create a Wordle. So, you’re wondering what on earth “wordle” means, right? Wordle is fun word art you create.

Wordle has lots of uses. Students can create poetry, practice new vocabulary words or spelling lists, create a visual of key points in a novel, and even make a one-of-a-kind poster for projects.
Students can create with Wordle at home by clicking the button.
Caution:   Wordle is extremely habit-forming! Your student might just be caught Wordling the night away…

2013

So, what should we call this year? Two thousand thirteen or twenty-thirteen?  With the recent flip of our calendar, this has become a most interesting discussion in our classroom.  We've decided to take a poll.

Happy New Year!

The beginning of a new year seems like a good time to think about changes. Before the winter break, students were asked to reflect on what they have accomplished so far in the school year and make plans for the rest of our year together. After writing resolutions, students created posters to display on our bulletin board and remind them of their goals for 2013.

What were the top 5 resolutions

#1  Read more

#2  Study before tests.

#3  Organize the binder and desk.

#4  Practice math facts.

#5  Turn in every assignment on time.

Enjoy the rest of the break and get excited for second semester! We've got resolutions to help us finish the year strong.  I'll see all on January 8th.

A shout out to Jenaya for sharing her New Year Craftivity over at TPT.
