A Virtual Field Trip

Grace recently had the opportunity to visit her brother who is stationed in the country of Korea.  Today Grace took classmates on a virtual field trip to discover and explore an environment outside the classroom.
It was a fascinating trip and we thank Grace for the time and effort she invested in her presentation. The slide show and souvenirs helped classmates visualize and experience the Korean culture. The part the students most enjoyed was no doubt, the Korean treats that came with chopsticks.

Grace proved that Korean Skittles are very, very sour!

Very interesting presentation, Grace! Thank you!

Spelling City

This year your child may use Spelling City at home. Spelling City is a website that helps students learn their weekly spelling and vocabulary words while having fun at the same time.

As a teacher, I will put up my weekly spelling lists on Spelling City and your children can review the words, and play spelling and vocabulary games with their words to reinforce the learning process.
Here’s how to help your child master his or her spelling and vocabulary words:
Simply go to my homepage at https://www.spellingcity.com/Full05/   You can bookmark this URL on your computer to make it easy for your child to access the class word lists!
Many kids enjoy building their spelling skills with Spelling City. Please encourage your children to spend about twenty minutes, two nights in a row before their weekly test. Let’s work together as a team to ensure that your child masters the spelling lists.
Happy Spelling!

Students Flip Over Story Elements

During the past two weeks we have been doing a LOT of work with elements of fiction texts . . . setting, characters, and plot . . . WHEW!  We've had several good discussion surrounding how these elements affect the text we are reading.

Students got real crafty and created flip books for our hallway bulletin board. You'll want to check it out at open house next week.

This year Norfolk Public Schools has a new reading curriculum titled Wonders. Your child will learn how to become a confident and fluent reader in the 21st Century. Already the children are telling me there is a great deal of interest at home. A big thanks for your enthusiasm and support of your child's reading. Students received a username and  password today.  This new program has a digital component that allows learning to continue at home with meaningful practice. Perhaps this weekend you would like to check it out with your child. This video provides a short overview of the school to home connection.
