Hello, Middle School, it's me!

This year our  writing curriculum will include the Step Up to Writing program with a focus on descriptive writing.  A descriptive essay describes a person, object, or event so vividly that the reader feels like he/she could reach out and touch it. Descriptive writing paints a picture. 

To help students understand the notion of vivid description, they started the year writing a brief description of a person - a person they know quite well - a self-portrait.

Parents, you will want to check out our bulletin board at the open house. Students are excited to share their first writing piece.

Reach for the Stars!

Every student needs something to reach for. 
Some call it a challenge and others call it a goal.

Goals give us a direction to take. They motivate us and guide us. In fact, the very act of goal setting takes us one step closer to achieving that goal.

Room 102 began the year brainstorming a list of goals.  Once finished, students set a goal for the year. The goals were listed and now the real challenge begins - -the reach towards achieving them.

It’s going to be a fun year with this group of fantastic fifth graders. The adventure has begun!

Pop Into 5th Grade!

Today is the start of the 2012-2013 school year. For my students it is their first year in a new building, first day with several new teachers, first day with lockers, first day with new classmates. Clearly,  first day jitters rule. 

I want to do something fun for each of the kids in my room. I hope to encourage them as they start the new school year. I  got their attention (and smiles) with a soda pop theme.

The scavenger hunt introduced several procedures and the layout of the room.

Most students were real serious about the estimation jar. We will use estimation thoughout the year to hone their math skills, plus add some fun to the curriculum.

104 Hershey Kisses were counted.

The middle school is a big change for most students. Most kids feel excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids are nervous or a little scared because of all the new things. Luckily, these "new" worries only stick around for a little while. 

It is my goal that your child's fifth grade experience is filled with personal growth as a thinker and learner. There are so many fun things to do and learn in the fifth grade. I am looking  forward to the adventure.  

Please know "PARENTS" are always welcome in Room 102!   I value your input.
