"Wonders"-ful

This year students will continue in the Wonders reading curriculum.  Most of our students were introduced to this program in fourth grade. Already the children are telling me there is a great deal of interest at home. A big thanks for your enthusiasm and support of your child's reading.
Students received a username and  password. This new program has a digital component that allows learning to continue at home with meaningful practice. All these creative activities are connected to the content being taught during the week.
This video provides a short overview of the school-to-home connection.
Click here to check out the site. Students may use their assigned username and password to log in at home and receive additional practice. It's that simple!

This digital component is a "Wonders"-ful addition to our reading curriculum.
Happy Reading!

Planner Police

It is just so exciting to unpack new school supplies. Room 100 has spent the first week getting organized.  As students rotate between several classrooms, organization helps them experience success. Students are learning to maintain planners and binders daily. This task will only feel like a mammoth chore if it is neglected over a period of time.
You may monitor your child's progress at home by checking the folders in the binder. Assignments are placed in subject folders and every student carries a yellow folder labeled Take Home. Graded papers and school notes are placed in this yellow folder. These graded papers may come out of the binder at night. We hope you will take time to discuss your child's work and offer encouragement.
Organization skills are worthwhile life-long skills. The goal for organization is to eliminate tardiness, forgetfulness, and lack of preparedness.
The Planner Police make frequent visits to Room 100. Their job is to check students' planners, binders, and desks. If needed, students are ticketed and encouraged to get organized before they get the incentive treat.
Today's planner police treated the entire class to donuts. We are off to a great start. It has been such fun getting to know these kiddos.
Thanks again for equipping students with the needed supplies. I think they all agree that new supplies add to the back-to-school fun. New crayons will always make me a happy person - - I don't care how old I get!

One Word Project

Jon Gordon, author of the bestselling book, The Energy Bus, spoke with teachers at the opening assembly for the 2014-15 school year, passing along a message of positivitiy and prompting teachers to select one word to guide them through the new school year.
One Word is a movement. "It's all about scrapping a list of goals that are easily forgotten. Instead One Word asks participants to choose just one word that sums up who you want to be or how you want to live. Choose one word that is the focus every day, all year long."

Team 1 teachers knew it would be fun to involve students in the Energy Bus/One Word project. Mrs. Robinson, our principal,  joined the team and read the student edition of the book to our classes.
After much discussion on the new school year and this project, students were challenged to choose a word.

The words ranged from silly and fun to quite thought-provoking.

Flip books were created to record each student's word. The hope is students will discover the big impact one word can make.

We are trusting this one word will become the compass that directs our decisions and guides our steps.

The One Word project is giving us one more way to create a positive, productive environment at our school. Please take some time and ask your child about the word he or she chose and the reason why.

Soda-lighted to Meet You!

Today is the start of the 2014-2015 school year.  The middle school is a big change for students. Most kids feel excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids are nervous or a little scared because of all the new things. For my students it is their first year in a new building, first day with several new teachers, first day with lockers, first day with new classmates. Clearly,  first day jitters rule.  Luckily, these "new" worries only stick around for a little while.
I wanted to do something fun for each of the students in my room. I hope to encourage them as they start the new school year. I  got their attention (and smiles) with a soda pop theme.
To help students learn procedures and locate items in their new classroom, they were given a pop quiz. This quiz got students out of their chairs and exploring the layout of the classroom.

The "Pop Quiz," reward included notes of encouragement for the new year.
We are soda-lighted to be teaching your child.  Team 1 students will have three core teachers - Mrs. Pieper, Mrs. Fehringer, and Mrs. Full. It is our goal that your child's fifth grade experience is filled with personal growth as a thinker and learner. There are so many fun things to do and learn in the fifth grade. We are looking  forward to the adventure.
Please know parents are always welcome in Room 100.
Let the adventure begin!

Remind

Technology never ceases to amaze me! It is one of my favorite parts of teaching and I make an effort to use it as a tool to make learning and organizing easier and fun! I know that life can get a bit hectic and things are hard to remember, so I would like to introduce you to a text reminder application that will allow me to periodically send out classroom and school reminders via text message. The app is Remind.

The reminders I will send include upcoming tests and school functions.

It is my hope that parents with cell phones will choose to participate in this FREE program as a way to improve home and school communication and help us to have a successful year! To sign up, all you have to do is text (402) 206-2653 with the message @fullclas (and no, that is not my personal cell phone number). That’s it! Simple!

Rest assured that you will never receive my personal cell phone number or the phone numbers of any classmates or other parents. I also will not be able to see your number through this app in order to maintain privacy. You will never receive advertisement texts and you may choose to opt out at any time by messaging ‘STOP’ to the above number.

If you do not have a cell phone or do not receive text messages, you may still subscribe via email by sending an email to fullclas@mail.remind.com

Thank you for your support.

Summer is Ending

On my desk this morning is an iced coffee made with this recipe. The early morning hours are my favorite. It's that time of year when my thoughts turn to a classroom that has been packed away for the summer. Preparation is underway for the new school year. I am a teacher who has the opportunity and the fun of creating the learning landscape for a group of students where the reading and writing inside these four walls will be engaging.

I am immersed in setting up my classroom. The excitement builds as I prepare for a new class of fifth grade students. Mark your calendar as school begins next week - Thursday, August 14th!

See you soon!
