The End of Semester Winter Celebration!
Norfolk Middle School marked the end of the first semester with a winter celebration in the school gymnasium. Students faced off in a series of games against each other. Room 102 rallied for the back-to-back push up competition.
Over 70 students at the assembly walked away with a treat. Prizes were given out by drawing names from a hat. It was a perfect way to end the semester and to reward all the hard work students put in over the last few months to make the semester as successful as it was!
Back in the classroom EVERY student received a prize. Javier distributed the scented pencils from the PTA. Fun was had by all.

Parent Post
This generation of students is more likely to be armed with cell phones, laptops, and iPods than with spiral notebooks and No. 2 pencils. Kids are high tech. They like electronics -- it's speaking their language.
Education is changing. Today Room 102 questioned a typical school day in the life of parents. We're curious about your best memories of a school day. Was there technology? Favorite book? What could you tell us about your school memories?
Thanks for commenting!

December Book It
Book It motivates children to read by rewarding their reading accomplishments. Pizza Hut is proud of all Book It readers! The restaurant congratulates every student for meeting the monthly reading goal and rewards them with a free, one-topping Personal Pan Pizza.
During December Room 102 is reading through seasonal books to meet a Book It goal.
Pizza and winter break - -that's a fun combo!

Planetarium Field Trip
The Planetarium is a sky theater where it is possible to simulate the night sky at any place on Earth at any time of the year. The Wayne State College Planetarium with its audiovisual special effects explored topics such as the moon, constellations, planets, and galaxies. In the planetarium concepts were demonstrated in ways that are impossible in a classroom. This translates into enhanced learning for students.
Our field trip combined the planetarium visit with a tour of The Wayne State College Museum of Natural History. Thank you for sharing those critters, Dr. Loggins!

Happy Thanksgiving!
Room 102 celebrated Thanksgiving with friendship bread.
Ten days prior to our Thanksgiving break, Mackenzie brought a Ziploc bag of Amish Friendship Bread starter to class. For ten days students took turns mashing the gloopy substance. We added the flour, sugar, and milk to keep it “growing.”
The timing for baking was perfect . . . Thanksgiving, friends, and a cinnamon treat!
Thank you, Mackenzie, for "starting friendship" in Room 102!

11.11.11
Room 102 was able to thank some real-life heroes on Friday. All the students know someone who serves in the Military - -parent, uncle, cousin, grandparent, Mrs. Uzzell's son. Today was a great time to thank them for what they have done; for their willingness to sacrifice for the sake of others.
For your bravery, hard work, and dedication, we thank you! |

The Internet is Down!
No Internet! Don't panic! We can revert to earlier behaviors. Room 102 broke out the board games with actual dice. What? We have to roll the dice manually? Yes, yes you do.
Curriculum board games provide a motivational way for students to review important concepts. They engage children in an activity that challenges the mind, teaches social skills, and promotes active learning while having fun!

Said is Dead
Monday, October 31, Room 102 mourned the loss of the word "said" plus several of his buddies.
The Burial |
The Graveyard Cake |
Tombstone Brownies |
After the burial, students began to study revision- the third stage in the writing process. They are replacing vague, lifeless words with words that are clear and specific. Students are learning to use words that draw a picture in the reader's mind.
