Character Education

As part of our Character Education emphasis at Norfolk Middle School, we have monthly assemblies where we honor students for demonstrating the current month’s character trait.  Along with honoring students, we have a lot of fun at these assemblies as we celebrate being a great school with a great student body in a great community! Parents are always invited to attend these monthly assemblies—see our monthly calendar and watch for days and times.

September's assembly focused on the quality of responsibility. So many students on Team 2 have settled in and are off to a great school year as responsible students.  We were happy to treat them today and remind all students,  "DEW make responsible choices and behave in a responsible manner." 

4 Powerful Sentences

We have been busy, busy, AND busy learning the four sentence types. Students have been hard at work practicing these four different types of sentences in their writing.  

We made an anchor chart to remind us sentence variety has power in writing. Essays become much more interesting and engaging when writers use all four types of sentences:   

 declarative, imperative, exclamatory, and interrogative.

Each student created a flip book to display in the hall with the anchor chart. 

 We're rather excited to share so many examples of each type of sentence.

Recycling Contest

Green Fiber is hosting a paper recycling competition between schools. Students are encouraged to bring recyclable newspaper and paper products to school. The recycling bins will be located at each main entrance of the building.  GreenFiber has given our school paper bags to fill with paper recycling. Plain ol' grocery bags from home are acceptable too.

The contest will last for two weeks ending on Friday, October 5th.

Dot Day

Every year on September 15ish, students around the world celebrate International Dot Day. Inspired by Peter H. Reynolds book, The Dot, students are encourage to "make their mark."

How did Room 102 celebrate International Dot Day? We read the book, The Dot, by Peter H. Reynolds to kick-off this special day.  Each student wrote a short narrative about a student named Dot and how this student made “a mark” on the world. There was a fun twist to the assignment. Students were not allowed to use letters with a dot (in other words no i or j).  Yikes! This forced students to carefully think about word choice and actually try out some new words. 

A large poster was displayed on our class door for the week.  All who came to visit our classroom around September 15ish were asked to create their own original DOT and add it to the gallery. 

Finally, the estimation jar for September contained 472 "dots."

Spelling City

Our spelling program emphasizes correct spelling in everyday writing, not just for an end-of-the-week test, but for a lifetime of spelling in the real world.

Spelling ability grows over time. It grows through instruction, your child's everyday writing, and through word study on specific words. Parents can extend this teaching in the home. Prepare now for your chld's spelling experience by identifying a special place, such as a file folder or box, in which to keep the material sent home. It will be important to review any words missed on the Friday list test. Spelling words will not go away after a Friday list test. They will appear again on review/skill tests each week.

Weekly spelling lists will be posted on Spelling City. Your child can review the words and play games to reinforce the learning process. Students must log in to receive credit. Computers in the Achievment Center are always available for student use before school, after school, and during a student's study hall.

3 G Networking

Norfolk Middle School would like to invite parents to connect with us on a "3G" morning during our book fair. We would like parents to come with their students between 7:15 a.m. and 7:45 a.m. to:

• Greet the student's teacher
• Grab a granola bar 
• Get a great book at the book fair.

Scholastic Book Fair

Scholastic Book Fair will begin Tuesday, September 11, and run through Friday, September 14.

Friday is Doodad Day. Only the doodads will be sold on Friday.  What's a book fair doodad?  Always included in the book fair are posters, pencils, erasers, and bookmarks. 

All proceeds benefit our middle school library.  

Preview Day was today. Remember, books make great gifts.
